Metamorphosis Series Artist Statement
I’ve been practicing ‘getting back’ for some time now.
Tendering the brush between thumb and forefinger
Trusting my genetic coding will re-engage
And I’ll be pulled down
Into the wet of song with the many voiced landscape
as in forgotten past lives, before technology, before “dominion over all”.

If I am to survive and evolve into a finer human being
I must rekindle my love affair with Earth
So I’m up early in the mornings
Practicing the language of cardinal and squirrel tail.
I bicycle and walk
Delighting in my heart beat
And the whorl of last night’s rain cradled in hosta leaves.
Carrying groceries back home
Appreciating the living land that sustains me.

This a concerted self-discipline
To drive out my lazy preoccupation
With all that is wrong
And going wrong
Between Us and Earth.
I have been cartwheeling in meadows of wildflowers
And floating amongst the monarchs
Putting my love affair with Earth into paintings,
My gentle footprint upon her belly
Keeping love alive between us.
